I found it difficult to find resources on YouTube for digital forensics as majority of tutorials seemed to be geared towards beginners or didn’t go into enough detail. YouTube is great for popular subjects such as programming, networks and web development but falls flat when it comes to narrow subjects. I’ve always turned to other platforms such as moocs or books when I’ve struggled to find decent tutorials on YouTube, so here’s a list of great resources free and paid for Digital Forensics.
MOOCs
EdX – Free and Paid
All courses are taught by University professors and industry professionals. There’s currently only one course for Digital Forensics at the time of writing. You can watch all the videos for free if you audit the course. You will need to pay if you want to do assignments, get a grade and a certificate. I’ve used this platform in the past to learn programming and networking concepts. I found that the course quality varies with some great courses and some not that good.
Coursera – Free and Paid
Coursera has been around for a long time, and I used to use it a lot when it first came out and everything was free. Unfortunately they have moved to a paid model with features are behind a paywall. Many courses are still free to audit so you can still watch videos but there’s no support, certificate or assignments. Cybrary – Free and Paid
Cybrary is a Cyber Security and IT learning platform. Unlike Coursera and EdX, Cybrary uses a subscription model for both individuals and teams and offers virtual labs, assessments and certification for paid users. Majority of the courses are behind a paywall but there are a few useful free courses in different Cyber Security subjects. The platform has many different Digital Forensics focused courses and I couldn’t really count them all as there were so many; eleven were free but very specific in their subject matter. eBooks
Fanatical – Paid
There’s a lot of IT related eBook bundles on this website with the majority from Packt Publishing. The quality of Packt ebooks do vary so it’s a good idea to look at reviews on Amazon before deciding to buy one of these bundles. Sometimes there are video bundles too of which you need to sign up to an external website for access.
HumbleBundle – Paid
I managed to snag myself a bundle which contained “The Art of Memory Forensics” and a whole bunch of other useful eBooks for less than £10. It’s worth checking out once a week as there’s usually IT related bundles up.
Video Tutorials
Udemy – Paid and Free
This is my favourite platform to get free courses as many of the instructors give out discount codes for their paid courses. I’ve collected over 30 courses in the past year with the majority being IT related. To find these free courses you can visit the Udemy subreddit or Udemyfreebies subreddit.
StackSocial – Paid
All video tutorials on this website are for external websites. They are pretty cheap considering what you get in return. There’s lots of Cyber Security bundles with a few only a few Digital Forensics related bundles.
